Mozart House Vienna

Posted by

The Mozart House is a residential building with a normal exterior directly in the centre of Vienna, about 100 metres from the central church of St. Stephen’s Cathedral.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived for more than two years in a 4-room flat on the 1st floor for rent (autumn 1784 to spring 1787). Today, large parts of the building are a museum. Mozart’s flat at that time can be visited (so-called Mozart flat). As far as we know, the Mozart House Vienna is the only preserved flat in which the composer lived.

Mozart House, in the city centre of Vienna

In other rooms of the Mozart House, including the basement, is a museum or permanent exhibition about Mozart and his time in Vienna. In the apartment on the second floor he composed, among other things, the opera “The Marriage of Figaro”. The Mozart Museum in the Mozart House is a modern exhibition where you can also hear many things. However, to our knowledge, there are few original items of the famous composer in the Mozart Museum and in the Mozart apartment. In the basement is a hall with excellent acoustics where classical concerts are held (Bösendorfer Hall).

Is a visit to the Mozarthaus Vienna worthwhile?

Our opinion: The Mozarthaus is well done and modern. However, the entrance fee (see below) is rather high. If you are interested in Mozart or want to know more about his time in Vienna, you should visit the Mozart Museum. On the Internet, positive reviews predominate. Vienna Pass holders should definitely stop by. It’s just over a hundred meters from the central square around the cathedral.
